The Shem Creek Experience
Mount Pleasant has it’s share of special waterfront property and Shem Creek is undoubtedly the town’s best-known destination. It’s a great place to catch a beer, some tasty shrimp, and to take in the action down on the water. While it has always been a major hub for Charleston’s shrimping fleet, Shem Creek has recently become a destination for kayakers and paddleboarders.
Some of Mount Pleasant’s best kept secrets are the neighborhoods surrounding Shem Creek, such as Cooper Estates, Creekside, and Shemwood. The oldest neighborhood slightly bordering Shem Creek to the east is appropriately called Old Village, and is often confused with Old Mount Pleasant. There is also Bayview Acres, which is a nice little oasis tucked in between Shem Creek and Patriot’s Point. See the map below to see each neighborhood.
The history of Mount Pleasant begins in Old Village, and a walk through the sleepy fishing village will easily remind you of the area’s colonial and antebellum past. The streets are lined with sidewalks and it is common to see neighbors walking down a block or two to the Pitt Street Pier or over to Alhambra Hall to enjoy a nice breeze coming off the harbor and smell the salt marsh.
Old Village has the sense and feel that newer neighborhoods can only dream of. It is a special area that is a quiet and friendly oasis from the hustle of modern Mount Pleasant.

The Groves was established in the late 1950s and is full of charming old oaks, half-acre lots and one story brick ranch style homes ranging in size from 1290 to 3000 square feet. The community of 194 properties is located off of Coleman (first light after Houston Northcutt heading toward Shem Creek) and is just a hop skip and a jump from downtown Charleston. Availability in The Groves is limited. There are no amenities but there is a small park close by and they are close to Shem Creek marina and the new Town of Mt. Pleasant Kayak Park.
Cooper Estates consists of around 350 homes that were built in the late 1960’s, primarily single story brick, ranch-style construction. It’s location next to Shem Creek and near the Ravenel Bridge makes the community fairly convenient to shopping, dining, downtown Charleston and life on the water. The subdivision has an active community called the Cooper Estates Civic Club which is not an HOA, but grants it’s members access to the boat landing on Shem Creek. Mount Pleasant Schools include James B. Edwards elementary, Moultrie Middle School and Wando High. For the health conscious amongst us, there are several healthy alternative stores nearby such as Whole Foods and Trader Joes.
Creekside Park Homes
The Shem Creek neighborhood known as Creekside Park offers home sites residing on tidal creek and marsh front lots. A select few homes also have private docks. The subdivision of 164 homes is close to the Creekside Swim and Tennis center where membership is available to use the 11 lighted tennis courts, community dock with boat ramp on Shem Creek, Olympic size pool, club house and 17 acres of common property. Homes were built from around 1970 to 1987 and are about 2300 to 5200 square feet.
