Located just across the Ashley River from Peninsular Charleston, West Ashley is the Holy City’s original car suburb, with the majority of homes built to house Charleston’s population boom that occurred during the post-war era when members of the American armed forces came home from Europe and the Pacific. The further away from downtown Charleston you go, the newer the housing. You can actually see how the architecture style evolved over the last 80 years as you drive through communities along the way, whether towards the historic Charleston plantations along Highway 61 or out Highway 17 toward Savannah.
The area is divided geographically into two sections split by Interstate 526, which abruptly ends at the intersection of Highway 17, known as Savannah Highway. Most of the new construction in West Ashley is occurring outside 526, in the Bees Ferry area. New neighborhoods like Carolina Bay and Grand Oaks Plantation offer spacious homes with amenities, parks and neighborhoods for families to enjoy. Meanwhile areas closer to the Ashley River bridge like The Crescent, Edgewater Park, East Oak Forest, West Oak Forest, Avondale and Windermere have fantastic older homes like these classic southern bungalows.
