Awendaw, SC is a small coastal town along SC Highway 17 just north of busy Mount Pleasant. SC. Bordered on one side by the Francis Marion National Forest and on the other side by Bulls Bay and the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Awendaw is a rural setting with very few subdivisions, and majority of homes are set on larger parcels. The town was founded in 1696 and was heavily affected by Hurricane Hugo which struck in 1989. Awendaw is home to the Sewee Mound, a shell mound constructed by the Sewee tribe which named the town. It is the northernmost shell ring in a group that stretches south to the tip of Florida and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
